Portugal’s grand palaces were some of the most grandiose monuments I’d visited when I first arrived in Portugal. I’ve personally visited many of the ancient castle-like palaces and modern mansions, and each one gave me a unique glimpse into Portugal’s royal past, especially those filled with furniture. I still can’t believe that people once lived in such luxury, but with so little comfort!

These majestic buildings dot the coast of Portugal, and have been built over centuries by various royals and nobles often with painstaking attention to detail. Here are my favorite palaces in north Portugal, central Portugal, and south Portugal, allowing you to get an up-close look at this nation’s history and culture.

Palaces in North Portugal

1. Paço dos Tavoras Palace – Mirandela

The Paço dos Tavoras Palace in Mirandela is a gorgeous building which is definitley worth your time while visiting the north of Portugal. Built in the 18th century by the Tavora family, this palace boasts stunning Baroque architecture and intricate Azulejo tiles.

It is a testament to the wealth and grandeur of Portugal’s nobility during that time. The palace also holds a dark history and is known as the site of the infamous Tavora affair where members of the family were falsely accused and executed for conspiring against King Jose I.

Today, although you can tour the grand palace gardens, the building itself is not open to the public since it is used as the town hall.

2. Brejoeira Palace – Monsao

Brejoeira Palace, located in the charming town of Monção, is a must-visit attraction for anyone traveling to the northern limits of Portugal and is interested in wine. With its impressive architecture and vast manicured gardens, this palace is a sight to behold. It is also surrounded by a vineyard and a wine tasting is also a possibility.

Originally built in the 18th century, the palace has been impeccably preserved and restored, giving visitors a glimpse of the opulence and majesty of times gone by. The Palacio da Bolsa in Porto is a gorgeous 19th-century palace that should be on your itinerary when visiting this vibrant city.

Built in 1842 as the headquarters of the Commercial Association, its Neoclassical architecture features ornate stucco and marble carvings, grand staircases and balconies, gilded ceilings, and intricate tile murals. Today it is a UNESCO heritage site that people come to see worldwide.

I loved exploring the lavish interior rooms, especially the Throne Room and the guided tours are an excellent way to learn about its history. I was impressed by the important collections housed here, including antique furniture and artifacts from Portugal’s colonial period.

6. Pestana Palacio do Freixo – Porto

Located on the banks of the River Douro, Pestana Palacio do Freixo is a magnificent palace in Porto that dates back to 1755. Built for the Marquis of Pombal, this stunning baroque palace was originally used as a summer residence and today it stands proudly as one of Portugal’s most beautiful 5-star palace hotels.

Although I haven’t stayed here, I did have a drink in the hotel atrium which was a really fun experience, but if you’d like to splurge on a bit of luxury, this is the place to do it!

The communal areas in the hotel are just out of this world, and its ornate balconies, lush gardens, and views over the riverfront cityscape are one of the best way to take in the historical significance Porto has on offer.

Palaces in Central Portugal

7. Bussaco Palace – Bussaco

Bussaco Palace is a true gem among the palaces in central Portugal. Built in the Neo-Manueline style, to me this magnificent palace is an incredible bit of history which attests to the lavish lifestyle of the early 20th-century Portuguese elite.

I stayed in the 4 star hotel for 2 nights and found that the palace’s intricate stonework, elegant arches, and ornate façade all make it really unforgettable. However, what sets Bussaco Palace apart from other in Portugal are the incredible gardens that surround it.

The gardens and forest span an incredible 105 acres, and feature over 700 unique plant species from around the world. The excellent restaurant is also worth mentioning, especially since it has such a beautiful view out onto the garden.

8. National Palace of Mafra – Mafra

The National Palace of Mafra is a magnificent Baroque masterpiece located just a short day trip from Lisbon. I’ve visited several times and thoroughly enjoy the furnished rooms every time. Built in the 18th century, this palace was originally intended as a monastery and then a royal palace, and served as a symbol of Portugal’s power and wealth during that time.

Today, the palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site and boasts over 1,200 rooms, including a royal library with over 40,000 volumes and two carillons with over 120 bells.

When you visit make sure to check out the palace’s cathedral with 6 organs, ornate decorations, and religious artwork. There are organ concerts every month which are really worth it too!

This is hands down my favorite palace because it’s one of the few palaces which is fully furnished. There’s even a bathtub and latrine from that era!

I always love walking through the monastery kitchens and hospital on the ground floor which was kept true to its original design. You’ll find that the hunting room in the palace is really picture worthy too since its filled with furniture made of antlers!

This is a great palace to combine with a day trip to Ericeira, the only World Surf Reserve in Europe!

9. Quinta da Regaleira – Sintra

The majestic Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra is an excellent example of Gothic and Romantic architecture. Nestled in lush gardens, this palace was built by Carvalho Monteiro at the turn of the century as a summer residence for the wealthy businessman.

Its striking façade features intricate stonework and sculptures, while its interior boasts rich furnishings and artwork from Portugal’s Golden Age.

This palace is a close second favorite for me because the grounds also feature several secret grottoes, mysterious wells, secret tunnels, and symbolic statues. Every time I visit I feel like I’ve been taken back to another time!

Pena Palace is undoubtedly one of the most visited and captivating palaces in Portugal. Located in Sintra, this remarkably colorful palace is a splendid showcase of Romantic architecture with its blend of Gothic, Islamic, and Renaissance elements.
