The Best Ericeira Surf Spots
The surf reserve has 13 solid surfing spots definitely worth checking out. Which spots you choose to try out will depend on your skills as a surfer.
1. Praia do Matadouro
This is a great beach to start as a surfer. Located to the north of Ericeira, although the rocky bottom can be a little daunting, this beach is known for its excellent consistent shallow waves in the foam.
It gets really crowded during summer months so try to get here early or late when there aren’t as many people in the water. It’s excellent for Ericeira surfing beginners and a spot where many schools go.
Break: reef break
Floor: rocky bottom
Level: beginner
Beach amenities: There are a few food trucks right in the small parking lot, and not much else. Across the way you’ll find Quicksilver’s shop and skate park which has an amazing bar which often has live music at the weekend.
2. Praia de Ribeira D’Ilhas
This is the most famous beach in the region due to its super consistent, quality waves and the excellent amenities offered at the surf center up on the beach. Surf competitions are held here and intermediate surfers will love the right reef break, considered the best in Europe.
Break: right reef break
Floor: rocky reef
Level: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced
Beach amenities: A large surf complex was built up on the beach a few years ago where you can rent equipment, hire a teacher, or have some lunch with a drink while you watch the surfers. Excellent showers and bathrooms also make this an excellent spot for a day in the surf.
3. Praia dos Pescadores
This beach is protected by the jetty which was built to create the harbour for the fishing boats in Ericeira. You’ll only get waves here at low tide, when the swell is large.
The left side of the beach out near the rocks is the most consistent spot, which breaks left. But you have to be very careful here since there is a rip tide that on bigger days that will pull you out of the harbour.
Break: left
Floor: sandy bottom
Level: beginner or intermediate on days with big swell
Beach amenities: Here you can get beach umbrellas, food and drink from the beach bar. This is the beach in the center of Ericeira town, so its the easiest to get to if you are staying in town. There are also descent showers and a bathroom.

4. Praia do Sul
This is a gorgeous beach which is generally packed with swimmers since it is Ericeira’s main family beach. Surfing here is best from mid to high tide and it is important to know that there are 2 breaks here: one is a reef break, which is further out, in front of the Vila Gale Hotel, while the other is in front of the beach.
Beginners should stick to the beach break and leave the reef break to the more advanced surfers.
Break: beach break with both lefts and rights
Floor: sandy bottom with lots of rocks
Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Beach amenities: Here there is a bathroom and showers, as well as a few really nice restaurants. There is also a great kiosk with excellent smoothies and fruit with granola bowls.

5. Sao Juliao
Praia de Sao Juliao is an excellent beach for intermediate to advanced surfers. The beach is known to get the most swell, so is worth checking out when there aren’t any waves anywhere else.
With peaks for all tide stages, this sandy beach is a great place to start your surfing adventure at any time during the day. The strong shore break here makes aerial tricks possible too!
Break: beach break with both lefts and rights
Floor: sandy bottom
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Beach amenities: There is a cafe and a surf school which are open only during summer months. Parking is fairly easy.

6. Foz do Lizandro
This beautiful stretch of golden sand is where the Lizandro river meets the sea. This changes the currents on the left side of the beach and creates a left.
Since this is one of the longer beaches in Ericeira, there is usually plenty of room for everyone wanting to surf, even in summer months when things get crowded. Here the strong shore break also means you might get to see some pretty cool aerial tricks!
Break: beach break with lefts and rights
Floor: sandy bottom
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Beach amenities: Has an amazing boardwalk with several excellent restaurants, bathrooms, showers, and a surf school which rents boards. One of the beaches with the best amenities in town as well as the largest parking lot.
7. Backdoor
Out of the 3 surf spots on Praia da Empa, this is the easiest one to surf. It’s more consistent than the other 2 breaks and is a right-hander. As this spot is particularly shallow, caution is advised before attempting to ride the waves here.
Break: right hand exposed reef break that works best in small swell
Floor: rocky shallow reef
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Beach amenities: None
8. Praia do Norte
This is the beach right on the north side of the jetty. The waves here usually have a strong current which pushes surfers into the jetty, so this isn’t a spot for beginners. It’s a spot which locals tend to surf because of the low crowds here and lack of real beach, especially at high tide.
Break: right and left hand break over rock which works best when the swell is large.
Floor: rocky reef
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Beach amenities: There is a proper restaurant right on the jetty, but nothing else on the beach itself. It’s so close to Praia dos Pescadores though, that you can just walk over to use the amenities there.

9. Pedra Branca
This is a powerful reef break with amazing tubes that will take your breath away. Praia da Empa surf spots are generally for experienced surfers since the waves can be really dangerous, with nasty falls more common than not.
This particular spot can only be surfed at high tide since the reef is exposed once the tide starts to ebb.
Break: left reef break
Floor: Flat reef- watch out for sea urchins!
Level: Advanced
Beach amenities: None! It can be reached on the dirt road which starts right in front of Ericeira Camping.
10. Coxos
This surf spot is slightly south of Praia dos Coxos and can be accessed from the beach. It is considered one of the most consistent, long hollow waves along the coast and is best surfed at low to medium tide.
This spot is favorite with many locals, and waves here can reach up to 3 meters; definitely for advanced surfers who can deal with a crowded wave.
Break: a perfect point break
Floor: rocky bottom
Level: Advanced
Beach amenities: There is a small beach bar on the beach, but there are no bathrooms or showers here. There is a decent-sized parking lot.

11. Reef
Be careful at this surf spot since it’s another very shallow break right next to Backdoor that can be dangerous. This wave produces powerful hollow tubes, which end exactly where the reef can be seen.
While this may provide an exciting ride, it can also result in nasty scrapes if you’re not skilled enough. Make sure you kick out slightly early so you don’t get hurt. A truly difficult wave.
Break: short righthand reef break
Floor: rocky shallow reef
Level: Very Advanced
Beach amenities: None
12. Crazy Left
This is one of the incredible challenges offered by Ericeira – Crazy Left. This wave is not for beginners, but only for experts and experienced surfers looking for that extra kick.
It offers some of the most intense barrels in this region, and overconfident surfers would be wise to tread with caution when riding here.
It’s worth noting that this wave is inconsistent in quality and doesn’t always work, but is more likely to work at high tide.
Break: left point break wave
Floor: rocky bottom
Level: Very Advanced
Beach amenities: None! Park the car at Coxos parking lot and access from Baia dos dois Irmaos.
13. Cave
This spot is known to be the heaviest wave in the surf reserve, which is why it is considered one of the hardest waves in Europe. Surfers begin in deep water and finish over a shallow reef. This impressive right barrel requires caution and skill, so beginners should stay away!
Break: slab break with rights
Floor: dangerous rocky reef
Level: Very Advanced
Beach amenities: None! This spot can be reached by means of a dirt trail slightly north of Ribeira D’Ilhas.
