Praia de Foz do Lizandro is one of my favorite beaches in Ericeira since it is so versatile. It really offers something for everyone! I love the long stretch of golden sand and how you can wade in the shallow river while flying a kite. Luca and I have always loved having an icecream on the boardwalk and having sushi in the sunshine!
Whether you surf your heart out or simply sit on a terrace with a beer to enjoy the view while the kids romp in the sand below, this golden strip of sunshine is the perfect place to spend an afternoon. Get a birds eye view of the beach by watching the following video, or check it out in real time on the BeachCam.

Crowds
This is one of the least crowded beaches due to the large expanse it offers. Even in high season, you rarely feel like the beach is overcrowded since there is just so much space and you can usually find a spot for your car in the parking lot.
In the water, there are generally lots of new surfers learning with a local school as well as lots of bodyboarders. So during the summer months, you’ll find the waves a lot more crowded than you might want.

For Surfers
This is an exposed river break, great for beginners in Summer, and intermediate surfers in Winter. The best month to surf here is usually December.
Depending on the shifting of the sandy bottom, some days offer better waves than others, but generally, the best consistent swells come from the Southwest. The Southern end of the beach is the mouth of the river, where there’s a left. Here you can rent a variety of surf gear as well.

Seawater Temperature
Temperatures rise to between 20 and 22°C mid-August, and lower to between 14 and 16°C end of February. A 3/2 mm wet suit works well in summer on windy days, while a 4/3 mm suit is recommended during the colder winter months. Click here to find today’s water temperature and wetsuit guide.

Tides
Click here for a tides table. Although tides are of special interest for surfers, beachgoers will also find this information of use since the river’s level goes up and down depending on the tide.
If going to the beach with young children, low tide is the time of day to go since a shallow pool of warmer water is created at the mouth of the river. Kayak or SUP paddlers can also take advantage of the tides to ease their way up and down the river.

Boardwalk and cafes – structure
The boardwalk on this beach offers the most structure and is the most extensive in all of Ericeira. It provides showers, board supports, bathrooms, and water fountains.
There is a huge parking lot with a public phone, bike supports, an ATM, benches, and ramps for getting on and off the boardwalk on wheels.
It’s also a great place to go for a drink or lunch at one of the joints on the boardwalk.

Indigo is the new guy in town and promises gourmet Portuguese food right on the beach. The decor is very relaxed and will immediately put you in holiday mode. A very worthy spot for lunch which goes for about 30 Euros per head.

NaOnda is an excellent little place with indoor and outdoor seating. It offers great sushi and pizza, as well as some nice bits for kids such as hotdogs, hamburgers, and ice cream.
A great place to watch the waves with a beer while the kids ride up and down the boardwalk. This place is usually open for lunch on sunny days, even during the week in the winter months. Lunch will set you back about 15 to 20 per head.

Renting a bike in the village is a great option and allows you to enjoy the cliffs along the coast for the 15-minute ride. There are also several viewpoints along the way which are truly worth the stop. You can even rent a bike with a board support if you’d prefer to bring your own.
Renting a car is another option, best if you want to go further than Foz, but since the parking lot is so extensive, having a car at this beach isn’t a problem.
